Over the past couple of months we’ve had a few tweets about running effective journal clubs at work and in universities, so we thought this would make a good topic for a tweet chat. So on Monday 7th December 8pmGMT we will discussing the planning, running and evaluation of journal clubs in health.
Journal clubs are a popular form of CPD within healthcare, allowing people to review current research and discuss relevance to practice. Aims include:
- keeping up-to-date with current literature of relevance to practice
- disseminating and debating effective practice, including clinical and cost effectiveness
- ensuring that professional practice are services are evidence-based
- learning and practicing critical appraisal skills
- helping to identify need for service improvement or redesign.
However, formats can vary. We also need to ensure that time is well spent, and used to make meaningful changes to practice and services where appropriate.
Before the chat we’d like you to think about the following:
- What is a journal club? Do we all share the same understanding of what they are?
- What do you need to consider when planning a new journal club, or reviewing an existing group? What do you expect people to have done in advance of a journal club session?
- How do you choose which article(s) to review on an ongoing basis?
- What tools and approaches can we use to support the critical appraisal of research?
- Can and do you incorporate resources from Cochrane and NICE into a journal club?
- What are the key factors for making a journal club it is effective in supporting evidence-based practice and improving care and outcomes for patients?
- How do we evaluate effectiveness of the journal club?
- How can we use technology to help plan and provide journal clubs?
