Our next Physiotalk chat will be on Monday 3rd September at 8.30pm BST.

The topic of the chat will mirror the theme of the upcoming World Physical Day campaign – the role that physiotherapy and physical activity has in mental health. World Physical Therapy Day is held every year on 8th September and is a great opportunity to join together with other physiotherapists around the world to promote a shared message to the public. Have a look at the WCPT World PT day resources and follow the #WorldPTDay hashtag to find out more!

The WCPT say that this years campaign is focused around the following key messages.

One thing is for sure – whatever your field of physiotherapy you will see people who have mental health issues. You only have to look at the infographic above to realise if you work in musculoskeletal clinic – you will see people with depression. If you work in neurology – you will see people with depression. If you work with older adults – you will see people with depression.

But how often do you look beyond the physical and consider the mental health of the people you treat? How much does any mental health issues impact on the effectiveness of your physiotherapeutic interventions?

Questions to consider

How often do you consider mental health issues during assessment and interventions with your patients?

How best to approach or address mental health issues with your patients?

What strategies do you use in promoting exercise for people with depression or anxiety?

What type of exercise is most effective for people with depression or anxiety?

How do you address issues with sedentary behaviour and low physical activity in people with more severe mental health issues?
