So we will be discussing considerations around bariatric equipment during the next chat. The obese population in the UK is growing and this group are considerably over-represented in their use of health and social care services. A survey by the HSE in 2007 found that 40%-70% of Trusts did not have a bariatric policy. This situation may have improved since then, but despite this a paper by Dockrell and Hurley (2020) found that 85% of nurse managers reported barriers to the provision of bariatric care in their area. Only 11% owned all the right equipment, with the vast majority hiring equipment when needed, causing delays in accessing the right equipment.
This situation may well be exacerbated in physiotherapy where we need to access specialised equipment for therapeutic handing and mobility.

Chat questions

- Can you access bariatric equipment in a timely way?
- Is the equipment fit for purpose?
- Is the equipment value for money?
- Can we access suitable equipment in the community?
