#Physiotalk 200: The Big Debate 9th May 8pm BST

This is the big one: after starting in December 2013 we have reached our 200th tweetchat! When Naomi and Janet dipped their toes into tweetchatting it was all a bit of an experiment. Now here we are 199 chats in and over 300 million tweet impressions later, plus a research project or two! We are indebted of course to all the physiotalk team members over the years and our wonderful guest hosts. But of course we couldn’t do this if people didn’t take part – so the biggest thanks must go to our followers who tweet and take part, or lurk and watch. Either way – thank you!

Chat number 200

It is just a number of course – but we would like to do chat 200 justice by encouraging a debate that has been a bit of an issue within the profession for a while…

This house believes that the physiotherapy profession needs to be more diverse.

As a debate question it appears a bit of a ‘no brainer’ doesn’t it? Not much of a debate there! Of course we are better if we are more diverse. But pick under the surface and there are issues bubbling away at times and sometimes in a far more blatant way that undermines the wish of our profession to be more diverse. As a profession we come from a background that in the past was predominantly female, white and middle class. We are going to see in the chat whether that mind set, no matter how subtly, still remains in our profession.

What do we mean by being more diverse? Well there are three diversity networks in the CSP: The DisAbilty, BAME and LGBTQIA+ networks, and I’m sure they would point to a lack of diversity and discrimination whether overt or unconscious in their working lives. You only need to look on social media to see examples from students, associates and registered physiotherapists that show how additional barriers are faced by people from a background that might be different to our own. This is being addressed by the CSP Equality, Diversity and Belonging strategy – but have you taken the time to read it? And will you act on it?

I started by saying the profession used to be white, middle class and female – and part of the changing diversity must also recognise the increasing change in gender balance as although the CSP is still reporting around 3/4 of the profession are female, the gender balance in students is certainly beginning to shift to a more equal footing. And then there is class – or probably more pertinent now, a consideration of poorer educational opportunities and poverty. Do we support enough people to come into our career from these backgrounds?

Normally we post the questions here to start the discussions in a tweetchat. But this time we want the questions to come from YOU. In the run up to Monday 9th May we want you to suggest the questions that matter to you around diversifying the profession. I’m posting this as a middle aged, white female – so how can I possibly know the questions that matter linked to the diversity of our profession.

    Algo you have to consider that you are a European woman. Physiotherapy in developing countries also is different from yours in North part of the word.
    Souths epistemologys would be taken into account. How do you see the profession in the countries with more poverty and more gender inequality?
    Other aspects that PT needs consider is the academic activity and publications coming from European or American white men’s. How give the power to diverse women in academy production ?
